With snow piled up on the east coast after a weekend of winter weather, the challenge of looking stylish as temperatures approach single digits feels especially daunting. And, since few things make me feel more uninspired than a fashion rut, I try to avoid the zipping-myself-into-a-sleeping-bag-puffy-coat-until-May route at all costs.
For dinner dates and parties that require venturing out on chilly nights, I like a base of tights and a thin black turtleneck under a dress for an added layer of warmth. A shearling coat is one of the warmest--and chicest--options to protect you from icy blasts. Add a colorful faux fur muffler and sleek-yet-sturdy boots and you'll be toasty from chin to toe.
On busy days of errands, lunch with friends, or afternoon shopping, a chunky, oversized sweater and impenetrable faux leather leggings are my go-to. Bundle up with a stylish alternative to your typical knitted scarf and a beanie with a cute pom-pom. Top everything off with a luxe fur-lined parka and you're ready to brave even the coldest of days.
And of course, for those days when the snow is blowing sideways and the streets are pocked with landmines of icy slush puddles, don't forget your two most indispensable winter accessories: booze and taxis.
